Why Make This Rocket Ship Craft

I was inspired to make this cardboard rocket ship craft after seeing this post on instagram.

It’s a viral how-to video showing the process behind making butterfly wings out of cardboard and other common craft materials.

Why did it go viral? It’s got these colorful peek-a-boo cutouts that make beautiful shadows in the sun!

We’re more of a rocket ships household over here, so I had to make our own version!

Inspiration for the rocket ship craft came from this butterfly wings cardboard craft created by @thedailynelly on instagram.

Materials to Make the Rocket Ship Craft

You probably already have almost everything you need to make this rocket ship craft for your kids.

For everything else, I’ve got a list and all the links here for you!

Materials You Need to Make the Rocket Ship Craft from planithomeschool

Materials:

  1. Cardboard (we used one large toddler car seat box 🤣)
  2. Hot glue
  3. Razor knife
  4. Sharpie
  5. Cellophane film sheets

That’s it!

Optional: Depending on the thickness of your cardboard, you may be able to get by with something like an Exacto knife.

Feel free to swap an Exacto knife out for the recommended razor knife if so.

How to Make the Rocket Ship Craft

Let’s blast off to fun playtimes and core memories with making the rocket ship craft!

First, gather up your cardboard and lay it out flat.

Next, use a Sharpie to outline the rocket ship shape.

This outline can be as large or as small as you want, just keep in mind that you’ll want to leave enough space to make the colorful windows so the sun can shine through them.

Once you’ve got your outline, (carefully!) use your razor knife to cut out the cardboard.

Your rocket ship is coming to life!

The special part is up next. It’s time to design your rocket ship’s windows!

Use a Sharpie to draw the windows on your rocket ship, then cut them out.

Last, take your time and carefully cover the window cutouts with cellophone film sheets.

  • Look through the rocket’s colorful windows to observe how sunlight changes the colors and shapes of shadows, turning playtime into a hands-on light and color science lesson.
  • Children can launch the rocket in pretend missions, narrating space adventures while building storytelling and oral language skills.
  • They can measure how far the rocket flies when tossed gently, turning it into a simple math and measurement activity.
  • Decorate the rocket with crayons, paint, or foil, practicing fine motor skills and imaginative thinking.
  • Create a solar system map on the floor and fly the rocket to each planet they are studying.
